Interview with David Choules, Associate Director at IHS Markit

The Frontier team asked David Choules, Associate Director of their Upstream business to tell us a little more about the company, and how IHS Markit has over the last 60 years worked within the energy industry to develop strong partnerships and trusted relationships.

How strong is your African research and coverage?

David: IHS Markit is well known for the strength of its African coverage. Our industry scouting network is a key differentiator for us, which sees us communicating with operators, government agencies and service companies alike. Numerous technical teams are positioned around the world, and are proficient in more than 30 languages, with hundreds of daily contacts, covering activity across Africa and globally. Add to that we directly connect customers with our experts. In terms of our data provision, we maintain the most complete and up to date analysis of upstream projects, updated daily. For instance, for Africa alone we include over 4,000 prospects, nearly 10,000 surveys (metadata), 7,000 reservoirs, 60,000 wells, and nearly 300 Farm-in Opportunities.

In addition, we value nearly 2,000 African oil & gas assets with full economic analysis on them all.  Finally, we offer African exploration teams looking at basin entry opportunities, a unique framework to efficiently compare basin geology, petroleum system and plays. With our comprehensive midstream database also covering all African infrastructure, we believe we offer a best-in-class information partnership with our customers.

You mentioned one key differentiator, how else do you differentiate yourself from other information providers?

David: IHS Markit is highly diversified and works within a large number of industries. Many of our customers need to see the interconnected factors that impact their organisations. We utilise our expertise within other industries to better inform the work we do in our upstream research. Also our ability to attract, develop and retain the best and brightest talent is the cornerstone of our competitive advantage.

Finally, because we cover so many aspects of the energy value chain our methodology tends to be bottom up. For instance, our asset evaluations begin life with inputs from our geologists, engineers and economists. We then develop a fully engineered cost model and schematic for every project.  I’m not aware of any other information provider that uses this holistic approach.

How does IHS Markit help its customers to meet the challenge of Energy Transition?

David: Our Upstream Transformation service is helping our clients identify trends for reducing, offsetting and using GHG emissions from core upstream operations, benchmark their actions vs. others, and define emerging best practice in emissions managements for companies and governments.

How do you feel IHS Markit will add value as a Corporate member of the Frontier Energy Network?

David: From our world leading energy experts, we hope to share occasional articles and webinar invitations with this group. We are also available to discuss, without obligation, any information or consultancy needs that this group may have.
